Course description

A point-to-point traverse of the central Wasatch Mountains, one of the founding races of ultrarunning’s Grand Slam. From East Mountain Wilderness Park in Kaysville, the course runs south to the mouth of Bair Canyon and ascends nearly 4,200 feet in 4.4 miles to the ridgeline below Francis Peak. It then follows the crest of the range past Francis Peak, through Farmington Flats and Arthur’s Fork, along Sessions Ridge, over City Creek Pass, Big Mountain Pass, and Bald Mountain, through Parley’s, Lamb’s, and Mill Creek Canyons, past Desolation Lake and along the Wasatch Crest Trail, through Big Cottonwood and American Fork Canyons, and up to Pole Line and Baker Passes. The route then rounds Mill Creek Peak through sections nicknamed “the Glide” and “the Plunge,” down to Pot Hollow, climbs the Cummings Parkway OHV road above Heber Valley, continues to Cascade Springs Road, and descends Decker Canyon to the Deer Creek Reservoir Trail, finishing at Soldier Hollow in Wasatch Mountain State Park.

Elevation change

Approximately 24,000 feet of cumulative gain and 23,300 feet of cumulative loss. Low point 5,000 feet; high point 10,480 feet.

Aid stations

Drop bags are transported to seven major aid stations plus the finish. Crew access is limited to Big Mountain (mile 31.9), Lamb’s Canyon, Brighton, and the finish line; pacers join at those same points plus Top of the Wall (mile 92). Desolation Lake and Rock Springs are hike-in only stations with no vehicle access, carrying limited supplies. Some sections between aid stations exceed nine miles.

Special conditions & average temps

Race-day temperatures have historically ranged from 25°F to 90°F, with wide day-to-night swings at altitude — one year brought fresh snow and sub-zero wind chill on Catherine’s Pass, another saw trail temperatures top 100°F. Utah’s low humidity contributes to dehydration risk. The course tops out at 10,480 feet, and runners have encountered deer, elk, moose, rattlesnakes, bear, and mountain lions along the trail. Dogs and other pets are prohibited from all race venues due to watershed rules.
