Course description
Five 20-mile loops around the lake at Huntsville State Park, crossing wooden bridges and winding through towering East Texas pines on a bed of soft pine needles. Despite the name, the course isn’t rocky — the real hazard is tree roots. Terrain is gently rolling rather than flat, with countless short rollers of 20-80 feet and the occasional 100-foot climb, adding up over five loops. Forest roads on parts of the course can turn muddy or dusty depending on recent weather.
Elevation change
Approximately 5,200 feet of cumulative gain per official course rating — a flat course by ultrarunning standards, which is central to the race’s reputation as one of the fastest 100-milers in the world.
Aid stations
7 aid stations per 20-mile loop, roughly 3-4 miles apart: Dogwood (start/finish), Nature Center, Gate, Damnation (visited twice per loop), and Far Side (water and gels only). The furthest gap between stations on the 100-mile course is about 4.3 miles. The race is officially cupless — runners must bring their own container or risk disqualification.
Special conditions & average temps
Early February in East Texas is famously unpredictable — past runnings have seen freezing temperatures and snow, torrential rain, and warm, humid heat, sometimes within the same race. Come prepared for anything. A $5 state park entrance fee applies for participants over 12, and dogs are not allowed on course.

Registration runs through RunSignUp and consistently sells out well ahead of race day — early registration is essential. No qualifying race is required to enter, but Rocky Raccoon itself is a Western States 100 qualifier: finish within 30 hours to be eligible for the WSER lottery.
